How to Transfer a Domain to a New Registrar

Transferring a domain involves moving it from your current registrar to a new one. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth transition.

1. Unlock Your Domain

  • Log into your current registrar account.
  • Locate your domain settings and disable the domain lock (also known as transfer lock).

2. Obtain the Authorization Code (EPP Code)

  • Request the EPP code from your current registrar.
  • This unique code is required by the new registrar to verify the transfer.

3. Verify Contact Information

  • Ensure the domain's registrant and admin email addresses are correct, as transfer notifications will be sent to these addresses.

4. Initiate the Transfer

  • Log into your new registrar account.
  • Start the transfer process by entering your domain name and the EPP code when prompted.

5. Approve the Transfer

  • Check your email for a transfer confirmation request.
  • Approve the transfer through the link or instructions provided.

6. Wait for Completion

  • Transfers typically take 5–7 days to complete. During this time, you can track the status in your new registrar account.

Important Tips

  • Timing: Transfers cannot be initiated within 60 days of domain registration or a previous transfer.
  • DNS Settings: Confirm your DNS settings to avoid downtime during the transfer.
  • Renewal: Some registrars include a 1-year renewal with the transfer fee.
