Domain 101: The Life Cycle of a Domain Name

Domains go through a specific life cycle, from registration to expiration. Understanding these stages can help you manage your domains effectively.

1. Available

  • The domain is unregistered and can be purchased by anyone.
    • Action: Search and register it with a registrar.

2. Registered (Active)

  • The domain is active and yours to use for the registration period (1–10 years).
    • Action: Renew before the expiration date to avoid losing it.

3. Expiration Grace Period

  • If not renewed, the domain enters a grace period (0–45 days) where you can still renew it without penalties.
    • Action: Renew promptly to reactivate the domain.

4. Redemption Period

  • After the grace period, the domain enters a 30-day redemption stage where it can still be reclaimed, but at a higher cost.
    • Action: Contact your registrar to redeem it.

5. Pending Deletion

  • If not redeemed, the domain enters a 5-day deletion phase and then becomes available again.
    • Action: None — wait for it to be released if you want to re-register it.

Tips for Managing Domains

  • Enable auto-renewal to avoid accidental expiration.
  • Set reminders for renewal dates.
  • Act quickly if the domain enters the grace or redemption periods.
